One of the most important advances in drilling technology is horizontal drilling under-balanced (with air or low weight drilling mud) which results in less formation damage, much greater contact between the well bore, and the formation of significantly improved flow rates. With new drilling technology it is also feasible to drill a number of individual wells from the same surface location decreasing the impact on the land surface and reducing drilling costs. There has also been improvement in fracing methodology where a move to larger massive frac volumes, in both vertical and horizontal wells, has improved production rates in tight reservoirs. This new technology, combined with increasing demand for natural gas and higher gas prices, has the potential to make the Dowra Sandstone play economic.
