Thames Garben

Map

Overview

The Thames Graben is a highly attractive prospective area in the southern North Sea. It is situated in shallow waters approximately halfway between the shores of eastern England and France / Belgium. Finavera’s research shows it has potential to produce gas and oil from the same source rocks that have been the primary source for gas in the southern North Sea gas fields.

The graben, which runs north west to south east, begins onshore in eastern England and stretches to France. More than fifty boreholes, drilled to depths of over 1000 feet, primarily for domestic water in eastern England, have enabled the graben to be defined. Results have shown the presence of gas and a high level of porosity in the rocks. The graben deepens offshore with an increase in sedimentary thickness.

This evidence is supplemented by a regional gravity survey which indicates that the sedimentary section is thickest where Finavera has secured its licences. Existing seismic data defines the two faults which bound the graben.
